Manchester United have endured a tough start to the season both on and off the pitch. With only two wins in six games across all competitions, the lack of results is clear to everyone.
However, the manner of defeats with the club dropping points from winning positions twice this season and more alarmingly against Brighton, lost 3-2 despite leading 2-0 after 10 minutes.
Off the pitch, the club has also struggled, even if it is not entirely the club's fault. The news of JJ Gabriel refusing to train and trying to force a move away has certainly dominated the headlines and added to the volatility that surrounds the club at this moment in time.
The club travels to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham in the final Premier League game before the international break. With the next game against Tottenham Hotspur three weeks away, you could imagine the toxic atmosphere that would surround the club if they were to lose.
Lacey was 'ready'
Despite the disappointment against Brighton, Shea Lacey was one of the only positives that came from the fixture. The academy graduate scored the first goal of the game with his trademark cut onto his left foot and smashed the ball past Jason Steele into the near post.
Like most academy graduates, he encapsulates the 'Manchester United way' of being a risk-taking, fast, and technical player who will always get fans excited. The Englishman also became the first academy player to score on their first United start in 10 years, since Marcus Rashford against Midtjylland in 2016.
Had it not been for injuries throughout his later years in the academy and for being unfortunate enough to pick up a red card last season in the FA Cup against Brighton, he could have made his mark sooner. But it seemed all the past obstacles had helped him mature and be ready to take his chance.
Michael Carrick revealed what makes Lacey stand out. When speaking to Sky Sports, he said:
“Shea Lacey is a fantastic lad. He does everything right, he wants to do well, he wants to learn.
“He waited for his chance, he was ready, and he gave himself every means to seize that opportunity when it came along.
“It’s fantastic to see someone so invested in the club.”

Academy always provides
Throughout the history of Manchester United, the academy has always been at the very heart of the club. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, the fingerprints of those brought in throughout the age groups are all over any major moment in the history of the club.
Most recently, in the 2024 FA Cup Final against Manchester City, it was two academy products, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, who scored the goals to win the match. In every major final the club has won in the last ten years, an academy player has scored in each one, from the aforementioned players to Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford.
With the recent Roundtable exclusive of Noah Ajayi agreeing to a new contract at the club, there could be yet another exciting winger to potentially get a debut opportunity this season.
Ultimately, even if they do not become the next Ryan Giggs or David Beckham, academy products have always been the most reliable players within the squad, and it seems this will not be changing any time soon.
