Manchester United finally ended a difficult run of results with a point at Fulham, but the latest headlines around Old Trafford extend well beyond Matheus Cunha’s late equaliser. Michael Carrick has defended Leny Yoro, Edwin van der Sar has revisited his route to Manchester, while the JJ Gabriel situation has developed further. Harry Maguire’s England fallout and a supporters’ group statement about the club’s ownership have also made the news.
Here are the main Manchester United news and talking points from today.
Cunha rescues United at Fulham
Matheus Cunha scored a late deflected equaliser to earn Manchester United a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage. In our full Cunha story, United fell behind when Lisandro Martinez turned the ball into his own net, but Cunha struck from around 20 yards with a deflection off David Affengruber.
Bruno Fernandes had earlier hit the post, while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno made several important saves before Cunha finally found a way through.
Carrick backs Leny Yoro
Michael Carrick has defended Leny Yoro after criticism of the young centre-back following the Brighton defeat. As explained in our full Yoro story, Carrick said there is no deadline for Yoro to prove himself and stressed that the 20-year-old has a “fantastic future” ahead of him.
Carrick also rejected the idea of making a knee-jerk decision based on one poor game, insisting Yoro must continue learning, improving and taking his opportunities.
Van der Sar reveals United nearly signed him earlier
Edwin van der Sar has revealed that Manchester United could have signed him six years before he eventually arrived at Old Trafford. In our full Van der Sar story, he explained that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted him to replace Peter Schmeichel in 1999, but the club instead agreed a deal for Mark Bosnich.
Van der Sar eventually joined United in 2005, stayed for six seasons, won four league titles and saved Nicolas Anelka’s penalty in the 2008 Champions League final.
Tuchel addresses Harry Maguire fallout
Thomas Tuchel has spoken about Harry Maguire’s reaction to being left out of England’s World Cup squad. Our full Maguire story reports that Tuchel was unhappy with how Maguire publicly reacted after learning of the decision.
Maguire had expressed his disappointment and said he believed he had done enough to make the squad, while his mother and brother also criticised the decision publicly. Tuchel said his concern was with how the reaction was expressed rather than Maguire simply being disappointed.
United reject JJ Gabriel exit request
Manchester United have rejected a formal request from JJ Gabriel to cancel his registration. In our full Gabriel story, the 15-year-old remains contracted to United despite being absent from training.
His situation is further complicated by UEFA regulations after he represented United in the Youth League against Sabah. Those rules prevent a player from appearing for another club in the same competition during the same season.
Gerrard warns JJ Gabriel over exit
Steven Gerrard has also spoken about Gabriel’s reported desire to leave United. In our full Gerrard story, he questioned whether moving elsewhere would guarantee the teenager first-team football and warned about outside influences surrounding young players.
Gerrard also pointed to United’s history of developing academy graduates and said Carrick and Steve Holland can help protect Gabriel’s development while giving him opportunities when they believe he is ready.
Contract cancellation request remains unresolved
The wider details of the Gabriel situation are covered in our second full report. United have rejected the cancellation request, while reports say Gabriel has already held talks with Barcelona and could potentially explore an overseas move after turning 16.
The report also notes that Gabriel has not trained at Carrington since his Youth League hat-trick against Sabah and had been due to work with Carrick’s first-team squad before that pathway was interrupted.
Supporters’ group calls for ownership change
Manchester United Muslim Supporters’ Club has called for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family to leave the club. Our full supporters’ group story says the statement followed Ratcliffe’s recent BBC comments about immigration and the UK.
The group said it had lost confidence in the current ownership structure and also defended the club’s diverse fanbase and playing staff. Neither Ratcliffe nor the Glazer family had publicly responded to the statement at the time of publication.
