It’s become standard practice for former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to make headlines with dramatic rants in press conferences.
The ex-Red Devils boss famously stormed out of a post-match presser demanding respect in the final months of his tenure at Old Trafford, comparing his Premier League titles to other managers in the league.
Mourinho’s next job in the Premier League at Spurs saw him sacked after hitting out at club culture during a press conference.
The famous manager is now at Real Madrid, following his appointment this summer.
In a fiery game early on in the season against rivals Atletico, which Real lost 2-1, the Portuguese boss felt aggrieved after missing out on two red card appeals.
Mourinho had a piece of paper to hand with screenshots of both incidents, showing them to the press and TV cameras before angrily ranting.
“Those were clear red cards. We can end this press conference now. The players gave it all. Now imagine if it were nine players against eleven,” the former United boss started.
“The poor referee, Ortiz, obviously can’t handle the pressure in games like this. I want to hug my players, because they gave it everything. We could save all this because the story of the match is right here.”
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone hit out at Mourinho’s stunt, saying, “You can not lose the referees’ respect”.
“No matter how much of a big name you are, like Mourinho is… we need to be respectful. Sometimes things go your way and sometimes they don’t”.
It’s an ironic statement considering Simeone was cautioned early on in the game by the refere Ortiz, but won’t matter to the long-term head coach of the side who won the match.
Following the result, Real Madrid dropped to fourth, while Atletico rose to second in the table.
It’s not as bad a start for Real as Manchester United, who have won just one of their first five Premier League games following a disappointing draw at Fulham ahead of the international break.
