Preston North End remain managerless after sacking former Manchester United youth player Paul Heckingbottom a week ago.
The Championship side have won just once this season, and responded to the parting ways with their manager with a 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers.
Despite the change, the North End fought harder, and probably should have had the win against a ten-man side and two-nil up on the hour mark.
It’s clear a coach is needed to sort out the club’s misgivings and steer them away from danger.
According to Talksport, former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant is in contention for the role.
The 43-year-old joined Huddersfield Town as head coach in the summer of 2025, before departing after eight months at his post.
Grant is now at League Two Walsall, after joining this summer, but could already be on the move. The outlet reports that Grant is part of a whittled-down shortlist that initially included 50 different potential successors at Deepdale.
The goalkeeper who made two first-team Manchester United appearances across a four-year stint between 2018 and 2022 won’t just walk into the role.
Bradford City’s Graham Alexander is also in contention, as well as legendary ex-Premier League striker Robbie Keane. Talksport also mention current interim boss Jason Eull may fancy the permanent role, but Preston’s collapse against QPR despite the extra man for 75 minutes won’t have won the coach any support.
It’ll certainly be interesting to see whether Lee Grant abandons ship at Walsall already. His side sit in the automatic spots in League Two after an unbeaten start.
The opportunity of managing in the second-tier may be one too lucrative for the 43-year-old to turn down, however. If offered a job at Preston North End, the decision Grant makes will be one to watch closely.
