He was arguably United’s standout performer in the Manchester Derby, but his efforts counted for little as his teammates struggled around him in the 1-0 defeat.
Mainoo has looked increasingly confident in possession and is beginning to showcase his ability to dictate play with his range of passing.
He is only 21 but is already operating with the responsibility of a senior player in the current United team.
Senne Lammens
The Red Devils may have found the net five times against Ipswich, but it was their goalkeeper who played a crucial role in keeping United in the game with two outstanding first-half saves.
Lammens could have done better for Lisandro Martinez’s own goal yesterday, but he responded with six important saves to prevent the scoreline from getting away from United.
His superb stops to deny Sander Berge and Josh King were particularly impressive.
Lammens has brought a sense of stability and assurance between the sticks, but United’s defence must improve if he is to start building a run of clean sheets.
Shea Lacey
The 19-year-old has made three first-team appearances this season, although his most meaningful minutes have come in the Carabao Cup.
Lacey made his full debut against Brighton & Hove Albion and needed just seven minutes to announce himself with a superb goal.
The youngster repeatedly used his trickery to beat his marker and showed an impressive willingness to track back and contribute defensively.
Carrick now needs to find more opportunities for Lacey, even if those come from the bench.
