Ruben Amorim has admitted that he needs to be more adaptable at AC Milan than he was during his difficult spell as Manchester United manager.
Ruben Amorim left Manchester United in January after 14 months in charge and took over at Milan in June. One of the biggest issues during his time at Old Trafford was his insistence on a back-three system, despite repeatedly saying his squad did not have the right players for it.
He has now acknowledged that he cannot make the same mistake again in Italy.
During a recent Milan match, the team appeared to switch from their usual back three to a back four. The change also helped Milan record their second clean sheet of the season.
Amorim admits he has learned from Man Utd spell
“These are different times, but we’re improving. Today the players had more freedom; in recent games we were a bit too static, stuck,” Amorim said as quoted by The Daily Mail.
The Portuguese coach was clear that his time at United has changed his approach. Rather than forcing a system onto players who may not fit it, Amorim says he must work with the qualities available to him.
“I can’t repeat my mistakes from Manchester. If we don’t have the characteristics to play a certain way, we have to adapt.”
Amorim has not completely abandoned his preferred approach, though. He still expects to use three at the back when the squad and circumstances allow it.
“We’ll go back to building with three, but we’ll see.”
He also highlighted the tactical demands of Italian football, particularly the way coaches set up their teams to deal with opponents individually.
“Here in Italy, the coaches are very good, especially at going after other teams one-on-one.”
