Peter Grant has floated a possible managerial merry-go-round involving Celtic, Manchester United, Eddie Howe and Michael Carrick if Martin O’Neill were to leave Parkhead.
The former Celtic midfielder would welcome Howe as O’Neill’s successor, but also believes Carrick should remain in the conversation if events at Manchester United were to open the door for another change.
Grant knows Howe personally from their playing days and made clear how highly he rates him.
He said: (Go Radio Football Show), “I was a teammate of Eddie’s and I’ve known him a long, long time. He’s a fantastic guy and fantastic football man.
“I’d be very proud if he became the Celtic manager if Martin decided to leave. But hopefully Martin will still be part of it, whether that’s upstairs or still the manager, that’s fine.”
Grant believes Howe has the personality to handle the demands that come with the Celtic job, although he feels the former Newcastle manager could still have his eyes on working in the Premier League.
“But Eddie, he’s got a great work ethic and understands the game. Man United’s the only team that’s got more pressure than Celtic and Rangers in all the time I’ve been down in England.”
That Manchester United situation led Grant towards another name he has previously considered for Celtic.
“Michael Carrick was one when he was out of work that I’d have mentioned for Celtic. I still wouldn’t go away from that.”
Grant then outlined a scenario where a change at Old Trafford could have consequences for Celtic’s options.
“If Michael lost his job and Eddie took it, I’d then look at Michael Carrick. I was fortune enough to work with Michael at West Ham and he’s another one who understands the game but has got a calmness about him.”
Howe has previously been close to the Celtic job, and Grant remains convinced he knows the size of the club despite that move failing to happen.
“Eddie Howe, 100 per cent, but I think he might be looking at the English Premier League after the things he said after the Celtic thing, he said he didn’t think the club was aligned in the right way if I’m led to believe.”
Grant also questioned the explanation surrounding Howe’s coaching staff at the time, pointing out they later moved with him to Newcastle.
There is nothing in Grant’s comments to suggest Celtic are currently speaking to either Howe or Carrick. His comments instead map out two names he believes should be considered if O’Neill decides his latest Celtic spell has reached its end.
