Manchester United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall during the summer transfer window was ultimately fruitless, and now he has signed a new contract at Newcastle.
Lewis Hall was Manchester United’s dream left-back signing in the summer before Newcastle slapped a pretty ridiculous £70m price tag on him. United then couldn’t afford the deal, but there is a general acceptance that interest will remain in 2027.
However, this got a whole lot more complicated as Hall signed a Newcastle contract, which will keep him at the club until 2031, strengthening their negotiating standpoint.

Speaking to Chronicle Live about interest in his services, Hall has now revealed that he was thinking about what led to his new contract.
“I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right.
“I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here, and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve.
“It was a no-brainer really to sign [new contract with Newcastle].”
United will struggle to sign Hall in 2027
Many assumed that by missing out this summer, United would revisit next summer and sign Hall for the same price or cheaper. But that looks really unlikely now.
With a new contract signed, Hall has all but tied himself to the north east side long-term, barring a huge transfer fee. If he costs £70m this season, United can expect to be quoted at least £80-90m next summer, especially if he continues to impress.
United’s only hope of getting Hall would be that Newcastle collapses or he has a falling out with the new manager, Matthias Jaissle, with whom he appears to have a strong relationship.
So, assuming nothing changes, this should end Hall’s interest from United. Because a left-back should not cost as much as he would, especially when the club needs almost an entirely new back-line.

Left-back remains a key position for United
While Hall might be off the table, United do still need to strengthen left-back next summer, with Luke Shaw likely to be released at the end of his contract and Patrick Dorgu unlikely to make the position his own.
Harry Amass has been solid on his one chance this season, but to expect him to step up and start for the 2027/28 campaign would be ridiculous considering the lack of football this term, which is sure to harm his development.
Expect United to be in for Alejandro Balde again, maybe Adrien Truffert, Jorge Salinas and other left-backs of this ilk who could be affordable when compared to Hall.
But for now, it is time to forget Hall.
