Scholes feels Carrick's been left disappointed
United's struggles so far this campaign are not too surprising when you consider how the summer transfer window was viewed at Old Trafford.
Despite the rebuild of the midfield, which saw Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba join the club, no other area of the first eleven was strengthened.
Many fans would have argued that signing a left-back and centre-back was crucial for United, who have conceded in every Premier League fixture so far this term.
Instead, no defensive players arrived, and Paul Scholes believes that Carrick would have been disappointed by the lack of backing by the INEOS-led hierarchy.
He said on The Good, The Bad & The Football: "Michael must be really disappointed with what has happened in the summer.
"I reckon behind the scenes he thinks he's been let down. What Michael did last year was very, very good.
"The most important time for Michael was the start of this season. These games now are where you put a marker down, it gives you a foundation for the rest of the season."

Carrick has refused to blame the transfer activity on the poor start to the season. The head coach has taken responsibility when discussing the problems at Old Trafford.
He has made some mistakes too; the gamble of playing Matheus Cunha as a false-nine has not worked and the ex-player's in-game substitutions have not worked out.
Many would argue that Carrick needs to improve himself, but it is undeniable that he has been hamstrung by the lack of recruitment in certain areas of the pitch.
