Matheus Cunha instead played centrally as United again struggled to create clear chances.
The Guardian noted that Carrick’s side relied on Cunha in a false-nine role during a performance in which United found consistent attacking threat difficult to produce.
That makes the summer recruitment decision increasingly relevant.
