Kai Rooney’s life as the oldest of four children Wayne and Coleen have together, is set to be featured in new Disney+ series, The Real Rooneys, which will be released on 24 September.
It will follow his burgeoning Man United career at the club he joined when he was 11 in December 2020. Wayne, who is the first team's record scorer with 253 goals, told talkSPORT he is happy where he is. "Kai has signed a long-term deal and he's at the place he wants to be, the place I want him to be. That's important. He's been at the club a long time and he wants to go and try and play for the first team and be successful."
Proud dad Wayne had previously revealed his son had his choice of several clubs but decided on United. In his early academy career, he ended the 2021/22 season with 56 goals and 28 assists in all competitions.
While Kai began his younger years as a striker, he has enjoyed playing out wide and acknowledged Arsenal influence. Asked by fellow footballer and content creator Gabriel Vanterpool whom he models his game on, he explained Gabriel Martinelli if he was playing on the wing, adding he prefers running in behind the striker rather than holding up play.
Wayne has observed the attraction of other attacking roles that Mohamed Salah and Lionel Messi made their own has led to a lack of the traditional no.9 in football. "The way the game is tactically, if you look worldwide there's not many, so it's not just a problem in England. On Kai, he added: "He's gone to the right. Left-footed, coming in off the right."
In January 2026, the 16-year-old Rooney made his first competitive appearance at Old Trafford when Man United U18s beat Derby U18s 2-1 in an FA Youth Cup match with Wayne watching from the stands.
