Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has had his contract at Wolfsburg terminated by mutual agreement.
It has been one year since Christian Eriksen’s contract expired at Manchester United, only for the Denmark international to sign for struggling Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. The midfield veteran made 34 appearances in his first and only full season at the club.
Despite featuring regularly, Eriksen’s time at Wolfsburg coincided with the team suffering relegation at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. They are currently fourth place in the second tier of German football, having won three of their opening six matches.
However, little did anyone know that Eriksen had already made his final appearance for Wolfsburg in a shock Bundesliga play-off defeat to SC Paderborn in May.

Christian Eriksen leaves Wolfsburg to move closer to family
Eriksen’s time at Wolfsburg has to an end after he requested the termination of his deal in order to return home to Denmark and focus more on his life outside of football.
Although the announcement stops short of mentioning retirement, the decision comes just three months after Eriksen collapsed while playing for Denmark in an international friendly with Ukraine in June. He hasn’t played a competitive match since then.
Eriksen’s statement via Wolfsburg’s official website read: “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark.
“I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows. I know that the club is now in good hands as it aims to make its way back to the Bundesliga, and I am convinced that a successful future lies ahead for VfL.
“I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me during my time at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure for me to play for you, and I will look back fondly on this period.”
Of course, that was the second time Eriksen had collapsed during a match. The first close call came during a European Championship match in 2021. Eriksen was resuscitated with the help of defibrillators following a cardiac arrest.
