Manchester United Women recorded their first victory under head coach Eva Olid, thrashing Sheffield United 10-1 in the Subway Players Cup at the Progress With Unity Stadium on Wednesday.
United had drawn one and lost two of their opening games under Olid, all coming in the Women’s Super League.
Man United academy graduate Mared Griffiths produced a brilliant display, scoring a hat-trick.
Matt Le Tissier opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 15th minute, sending goalkeeper Poppy Soper the wrong way.
Shortly after, Rebeca Bernal doubled Man United’s lead, rising highest to head a corner into the far corner, scoring her first goal for the club.
Griffiths added a third before Lea Schuller extended the Red Devils’ advantage. The Germany international capitalised on a short pass and blasted the ball into the net.
Ella Toone registered the fifth goal of the evening before half-time with a side-footed finish, wrapping up a brilliant first half for the hosts.
Schuller resumed the scoring in the 53rd minute. Left-back Jess Simpson sent a through ball behind the visitors’ defence for Schuller to calmly finish.
Two minutes later, Bernal was on the scoresheet for the second time in the evening, powering a header into the net from a corner.
Simpson then registered her first senior United goal, scoring directly from a corner. Griffiths then slotted the ball home to complete her brace.
Amy Andrews managed to pull one back for the Blades, only for 19-year-old Griffiths to complete her hat-trick in the 81st minute by turning the ball into the net.
