Manchester United transfer news has brought Brian Brobbey into focus after Sunderland’s striker produced a remarkable performance against Manchester City.
TransferFeed reports that United are monitoring the 24-year-old and that Sunderland could seek around £50m before considering his departure.
What can Brobbey offer United?
Reports from the likes of Daily Mirror journalist Darren Lewis believes Brobbey possesses the qualities required to perform for United. Lewis recently discussed the Dutchman on talkSPORT, highlighting his strength, movement and ability to trouble centre-backs.
Brobbey certainly gave those claims some substance at the Etihad on September 20. He scored three times against Manchester City, although Sunderland eventually lost 5-3. His first goal arrived after 12 minutes, before he added another in the 33rd minute and completed his treble shortly after half-time.
The striker has started all five of Sunderland’s Premier League matches this season, scoring three goals across 401 minutes. Sunderland have little reason to rush into a sale, either. Brobbey remains under contract with the club, while reports place his potential asking price close to £50m.
For United, though, the bigger question concerns how his qualities would fit into Carrick’s side.

There is plenty to like. His Etihad hat-trick showed how dangerous he can become when a match gives him space to attack. He uses his physique well, competes aggressively with centre-backs and attacks deliveries into the box with real intent. His pressing can give United another route to start attacks higher up the pitch.
However, United currently need greater control from their centre-forward. Carrick has spoken about the importance of performance and finding solutions during a difficult opening to the campaign, while United have struggled for consistency in possession and results.
That creates the main concern with Brobbey. He looks at his best when he can play directly, attack space and bully defenders rather than constantly dropping into deeper areas to combine.
His technical game therefore deserves scrutiny before United spend such a substantial fee. The 78% passing stats, along with the reported 11 possession losses from 69 passes, point towards a striker who could struggle if Carrick asks him to become a major link player.

There is another issue. Against a deep block, Brobbey who made our Premier League Team of the Week XI could find fewer opportunities to exploit his physical strengths, particularly if United expect him to create combinations around the penalty area.
The likes of Chelsea who seem to be most seriously linked with a bid for Brobbey, Arsenal, Spurs and Aston Villa might well be looking for goals in the January transfer window particularly Spurs and Villa who look especially light upfront and lacking firepower. If Gyokeres leaves Arsenal on loan to Juventus as has been rumoured Arsenal would need a replacement but whether Brobbey offers something different to Kai Havertz remains to be seen.
His hat-trick was outstanding, and Lewis has clearly seen qualities that could help a top Premier League side. Yet £50m represents a major commitment. For Manchester United, the real debate isn’t whether Brobbey can score spectacular goals. It’s whether his direct No.9 profile matches the possession demands of Carrick’s attack and would provide adequate competition to Benjamin Sesko.
