Manchester United are reportedly preparing for a change at left-back, with the club only willing to offer Luke Shaw a short-term extension beyond his current contract.
Luke Shaw remains under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2027, but TeamTalk reports that United are increasingly expecting the defender to move on once that agreement expires.
The situation comes despite Shaw enjoying one of the best seasons of his Manchester United career in 2025/26. The 31-year-old started all 38 Premier League matches, doing so for the first time in his career.
However, his long injury record and age have led United’s hierarchy to think about the long-term future of the position.

Manchester United are already understood to be treating left-back as a priority ahead of the January transfer window. The club want to bring in younger talent and establish a new first-choice option rather than continue relying on Shaw indefinitely.
One player being considered is Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell. The 27-year-old is entering the final months of his contract at Selhurst Park, and his situation could make him an attractive option for United.
Mitchell could potentially be available for a reduced fee in January if he does not agree a new contract with Palace before then.
United’s approach suggests Shaw’s future is becoming increasingly linked to their wider plans for the position. A short extension would give the club some continuity while allowing time to identify and develop his long-term successor.
