Real Madrid have officially announced that Raul Asencio will undergo surgery to resolve the issue with his tibia fracture.
The 23-year-old defender has been dealing with the issue for over nine months now and has been playing through it while relying on conservative treatment.
However, the injury has not healed to the desired level, restricting the defender’s involvement since pre-season under Jose Mourinho.
Now, after a fresh discussion between the club and the player, the decision has been made for him to undergo surgery.
“Our player Raúl Asencio will undergo surgery tomorrow due to a stress fracture in the tibia of his right leg,” the club statement read.
While an estimate of his recovery timeline will have to wait until after the surgery, recent reports suggest that Asencio could be sidelined for as long as two to three months.
As such, he might not play again in 2026 and will have to wait to make his comeback in 2027.
This will come as a bitter blow for the academy defender who was hopeful of getting minutes after the international break due to Ibrahima Konate’s recent injury and Dean Huijsen’s suspension.
The good news from Real Madrid’s perspective is that Eder Militao has resumed training and is closing in on making a comeback, which will ensure that the team has depth in the centre-back position.
