Ryan Giles has emerged as one of Hull City's most important performers over the past 12 months, since turning his Tigers career around when it looked like it would be over.
City's decision to rebuff Burnley's interest late in the transfer window was backed up in the 2-1 defeat at Newcastle United last time out, with Giles attempting 15 of the Tigers' 27 crosses on Tyneside, while in that game, he created two big chances.
Giles is also ranked in the top 15 full-backs in the Premier League across the opening five games, averaging in excess of seven out of 10, including his Man of the Match performance in the opening day win over Manchester United.

In truth, Giles' delivery from wide areas has deserved more than the one assist he's collected so far, which came in the thrilling 2-2 draw at Chelsea. Going forward, we know Giles' potency, with his willingness to get the ball out of his feet quickly and whip it into the penalty area, and that's backed up by his eight chances created in the opening five games.
When it comes to distance covered, Giles' 53km stacks up well against his peers and is just under four behind Regan Slater, who is in the top 10 of all top-flight players, and a box-to-box midfielder.

While Giles' attacking potency has rarely been in question previously, many have raised concerns about his defensive effectiveness, especially going into the Premier League and facing some of the best attacking players in the world. That's an area Giles himself has spoken at length about improving, and boss Sergej Jakirovic and his coaching staff have worked hard with Giles on improving that aspect of his game in the past 12 months.
There's been a noticeable improvement in Giles' defensive awareness, and ability to carry out his defensive work effectively, which is backed up by the stats, with him winning just shy of 62 per cent of all duels, while he's currently winning 71.4 per cent of all duels in the air, and is effective when it comes to winning possession back inside his own half, and getting rid of the ball when City are under pressure.
The 26-year-old is also hugely versatile because he can operate in a flat back four, as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 and if needed, can even operate further forward as a more attack-minded wide outlet, which gives Jakirovic more options. If needed, Targett or Stroud could be deployed deeper behind Giles, with him moving further forward. Undoubtedly, Giles is one of the best crossers of the ball in the squad, as we saw last season with the amount of chances he created for Oli McBurnie, and so far this.
At the start of the summer, following the arrival of Matt Targett following his departure from Newcastle United, and the later addition of Elliot Stroud, Giles knew he was in for a battle to keep his place. Targett's injury issues have naturally made life a little easier for Giles, but he's in the team on merit, and he knows if he keeps performing at the level he has been doing, then he'll keep the shirt.
And for a team looking to create quickly in transition, especially when they're spending lengthy periods of the game without the ball, Giles' ability to land the ball on a sixpence is absolutely crucial.
Seeing Giles' career blossom at City, when it looked like his move would be a disaster, has been one of the really enjoyable sub-plots of the club's success over the past 12 months, and long may that continue.
Few players are as likeable as Giles, and while that doesn't make them good players, it makes it all the more pleasing to see them succeed. Giles, like so many of the Championship-winning squad, has the ability to be successful in the Premier League, and Giles is grasping that opportunity that he saw slip away a few years ago when he joined Luton Town. Moving him out late in the window would not have been a sensible decision, and thankfully, common sense prevailed, and he will continue to prove his worth for the Tigers over the coming weeks.
