Former Sunderland, Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic defender Titus Bramble has taken up a new international coaching role with Pakistan

Former Sunderland and Newcastle United defender Titus Bramble has begun a new chapter in his coaching career after taking up a role with the Pakistan national team.

The 45-year-old has been appointed assistant coach of Pakistan’s senior men’s side, working alongside head coach Nolberto Solano. The pair know each other well from their playing days at Newcastle, where they shared the pitch more than 80 times between 2002 and 2007.

Bramble has already been involved on the training ground, helping oversee Pakistan’s preparations alongside fellow assistant Walid Javaid. Solano was initially delayed in joining the squad because of a visa issue before travelling directly to Indonesia for the FIFA ASEAN Cup. The former centre-back spent three years at Sunderland after joining from Wigan Athletic in 2010, having previously played for Ipswich Town and Newcastle during a lengthy Premier League career.

Since retiring, Bramble has gradually moved into coaching. He spent time working within Ipswich’s academy before later coaching in Dubai, and his move into international football represents another significant step in that development.

His appointment also reunites him with Solano in unusual circumstances more than two decades after the pair first played together on Tyneside. Bramble revealed recently that Solano asked him to become his number two after the former teammates reconnected in Dubai while the Peruvian was in the process of taking the Pakistan job.
