Tony Bloom explains Uefa Conference League pressure as Brighton prepare for Europe return

Chairman Tony Bloom said Brighton should embrace the pressure of returning to Europe this season.

The Seagulls finished eighth in the Premier League last term and qualified for the Uefa Conference League - Europe's third tier competition.

Brighton eased into the league phase thanks to their 4-0 aggregate play-off win over Norwegian club Tromso and start the league stage on October 15 against Lithuanian club Kauno Žalgiris at the Amex Stadium. It's only the second time in the club's history they have competed in Europe.

Premier League clubs have enjoyed success in the Conference League with West Ham, Chelsea and Crystal Palace all winning in recent seasons.

Bloom: We have a real chance

"I'm hoping that we will have many good performances and many good results," said Bloom to the Albion unlimited podcast. "Obviously winning leagues, winning trophies is really difficult, but I do think, for the men's side, we've got a real chance.

"Obviously the conference League is a very winnable tournament, compared to other tournaments we've played in.

"We're really looking forward to it. We know there's an element of pressure. We should embrace that pressure. We should look forward to it. Our fans definitely are looking forward to it."

We have European experience

Brighton last competed in Europe under Roberto De Zerbi in the 2023-24 season. Albion topped their Europa League group stage but fell to Roma in the last 16.

Bloom added: "We've got the experiences of three years ago.

"We know how difficult it is, playing the Thursday night and then Sunday afternoon.

"We're a bit more used to it as a club. We know what the schedules like and we know after the international break, what a tough run of fixtures we've got, but I think we are fully prepared for it."

Brighton in Europe

Brighton start the league phase of the Conference League at the Amex Stadium to Lithuanian side Kauno Zalgiris on October 15 and their first away night is at Czech Republic outfit Jablonec on October 22.

La Liga side Getafe (away) is November 5 and they have further home matches against Universitatea Craiova from Romania on November 26 and Monaco on December 10. The final league stage match is in Athens at Panathinaikos on December 17.
