The 22-year-old did not make a competitive senior appearance for the Premier League club - but was part of the Magpies squad for their Champions League campaign last season and was named as a substitute against the likes of Barcelona, Benfica and Marseille.
Thompson has earned invaluable first-team experience during loan spells with Chesterfield, Northampton Town and Ayr United in recent seasons and has been a free agent since leaving Newcastle at the end of last season.

With on-loan Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick remaining on the sidelines through injury, Pools have added Thompson to their ranks on a short-term deal.
Speaking after completing the deal, Thompson told the club website: “I’m excited to get started with the club and to get a chance to play having spent some time training with the first team. I’m looking forward to supporting the team and hopefully improving our position in the league over the next few weeks.”

Interim head coach Gary Liddle said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring Max into the group. Since the injury to Max Merrick, it’s been a position we’ve been short in, so we’re really pleased to add him to the squad. He brings good experience and is looking forward to the challenge of helping us get back on track whilst providing extra competition in the goalkeeping department.”
