Sheffield United sold Gustavo Hamer back to Coventry City in the summer transfer window as he ended his Blades stay after three years.
Sheffield United’s challenging 2025/26 campaign meant they were widely expected to lose Gustavo Hamer in the summer. His SUFC deal was due to expire in 2027 too, meaning that the best move was to cash in while they could still land a fee for his services.
They did just that, with Coventry City paying £6m to bring Hamer back for their Premier League adventure. The 29-year-old left Bramall Lane with a strong legacy and fond memories, managing 22 goals and 29 assists in 123 games for the club.

Few will dispute Hamer had earned his shot at playing back in the Premier League. So far though, he perhaps hasn’t had the impact hoped on his return to the Sky Blues.
What has been said about Gustavo Hamer’s form since leaving Sheffield United?
Hamer first made a name for himself in England in a three-year stay with Coventry City from 2020 to 2023. He starred in Sky Blue before moving up to the Premier League with Sheffield United, so a return transfer made for an emotional reunion.
Early on though, the 29-year-old has struggled to make an impact. He has played five times in all competitions, with three Premier League appearances totalling just 34 minutes. Hamer has been unused on the bench by Frank Lampard for the last two league matches as well.

The ex-SUFC man earned praise for a solid showing in the Carabao Cup despite defeat to Aston Villa, and Lampard has picked out his finishing ability from outside the box.
However, Coventry Live gave him an early season grade of just 4/10 having started his second City stint “a little bit sluggishly”. It seems the general consensus is that he needs a bit more time to get up to speed before they can start to expect to see Hamer’s best.
The Verdict: Hamer yet to catch alight with Coventry City, but Sheffield United are missing his spark
Hamer’s return to Coventry City was well received. Given how he thrived with them before and his success at Sheffield United, it was perhaps hoped that he could make a quicker impact on Lampard’s side.
The Brazil-born midfielder has been away from Premier League football for two years though, so he needs time to get accustomed to what is now a very physical league. Hamer will need time to get used to Lampard’s demands too, so hopefully the best is yet to come.
One for thing for sure is that SUFC are missing Hamer’s technical talent and ability to conjure up a moment of magic out of nowhere.
There are gifted players in Chris Wilder‘s side, but none who have stood out as the player who can provide that spark like their former no.8 did.
