Despite Timur Tutierov having never played in the Premier League, the Ukrainian youth-international may soon have to be relied on by Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris.
The winger arrived on Wearside in 2023 from Kolos Kovalivka in Ukraine and has made 10 appearances for Ukraine’s U19 international side and one appearance for their U21s. In the last three years he has shown great promise when playing for Sunderland's academy. The 21-year-old winger spent the second half of last season on loan at League One side Exeter City. During his time there, he earned his first games in English professional football, with 17 appearances and scoring on three occasions, including a goal in the Devon Derby.
So far this season, he has scored twice for Matt Craddock’s U21s side including a brilliant solo effort against League Two side Accrington Stanley, in the EFL Trophy. His performance was a great advertisement for himself, showcasing what he can offer in an attacking role.

When watching him in the PL2, he looks quick and technically gifted, often a level above his opposition. His ability to carry the ball forward and create chances makes him a constant threat out wide. In his most recent game, against Accrington Stanley, his ability was evident, scoring one and assisting one. His recent performances has seen him scouted by several clubs - with former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray’s side Blackburn Rovers - being the most heavily linked.

The Ukrainian has also experienced first team football, coming off the bench against Hull City in the League Cup as well as being part of the match day squad for AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.
Le Bris faces a demanding schedule after the international break. With seven games in 21 days. Tutierov signed a new deal earlier this summer for two more years and it was expected that he would go on loan. However, earlier this season, Le Bris confirmed that Tutierov trains as part of the first team and is part of his long term plans. This could indicate that he will be relied on this season and that the Ukrainian could be the answer to Sunderland’s squad depth issues.
