The 20-year-old missed United’s matches against Bournemouth, Millwall, Leeds United and Hull City due to an ankle injury picked up in training. He returned to training ahead of the Hull match and was allowed to join up with the France Under-21s squad for the international break alongside Magpies’ teammate Aladji Bamba.

Bamba grabbed an assist, and Jaouen kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Estonia earlier this week as they both started the match. But Jaouen will not return to Newcastle early, having picked up a hamstring injury in training.

The goalkeeper, who joined the Magpies from Stade de Reims in the summer for £18million, suffered the injury in training on Thursday and had an MRI scan in the evening to determine the extent of the damage. He will miss France’s next two matches against Luxembourg and Switzerland on October 3 and October 6 respectively.

The Gazette understands Jaouen is due back on Tyneside for further assessment but will likely miss the trip to Coventry City a week on Monday. Jaouen had made one competitive appearance for Newcastle since his arrival, a 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion at St James’ Park in the Carabao Cup back in August.

It’s the third different training ground injury Jaouen has picked up since joining Newcastle. The goalkeeper suffered a back injury in pre-season, which ruled him out of two friendly matches before being ruled out of a further four matches due to an ankle injury.

Now, his hamstring issue will rule him out for at least another three games.

Keeping Nick Pope - a blessing in disguise?

Newcastle tried to offload goalkeeper Nick Pope throughout the summer transfer window following the signing of Lukas Hornicek and Jaouen as first and second choice goalkeepers respectively. But after being unable to find a new club for Pope, the experienced shot-stopper has returned to the bench in Jaouen’s absence and looks set to remain there following the international break.

Jaouen is the latest Newcastle player to withdraw from his respective international squad due to injury after Tino Livramento left the England camp last week and Lewis Miley withdrew from England Under-21s earlier this week.
