Newcastle United rocked by fresh injury blow to £20m summer signing

Ewen Jaouen has just recovered from an ankle injury and will now return to Newcastle United with a hamstring problem.

Ewen Jaouen has reportedly suffered a hamstring injury and will play no further part in the international break.

A frustrating start to life on Tyneside saw the Frenchman roll his ankle in training. As a result, Jaouen - who made his Newcastle United debut in the Carabao Cup win over West Bromwich Albion - has missed the last four matchday squads.

Signed for £20million in June, the youngster is expected to challenge Lukas Hornicek for the No.1 spot. Jaouen recovered from the ankle setback to make the France under-21 squad for the ongoing international break.

Ewen Jaouen dealt fresh injury blow

He started both games for the national team - including a convincing 6-1 win over Estonia earlier this week. Any chance of Jaouen seeing game time against Switzerland or Luxembourg has ended due to his latest setback.

According to Le Parisien, Jaouen tweaked his hamstring and will now return to Newcastle. Further tests were carried out on Thursday to establish the extent of the injury.

Matthias Jaissle will be hoping the problem is not too serious. Nick Pope - who the Magpies tried to move on during the transfer window - has been drafted into the wilderness to cover Hornicek in recent weeks.

Jaouen arrived at St James’ Park aiming to target the cup competitions as he continued his development. However, Jaissle stuck with Hornicek for Millwall with Jaouen sidelined.

Ewen Jaouen on joining Newcastle United

Jaouen expressed his excitement at joining Newcastle for £20million from Reims. He was the first of eight summer signings at St James’ Park.

“I'm really excited to become a Newcastle United player,” he said. “As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one on one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back and being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to develop alongside the amazing players and staff here, enjoy my football, and prove my value on the pitch."
