Peterborough United have appointed former Premier League star turned pundit Robbie Savage as their new manager - with his first game set to be against Ipswich Town U21s next week.

The 51-year-old replaces Luke Williams at Posh after he was sacked last month following a poor start to the League One season. They currently sit second bottom of the table.

Savage has left his role at National League side Forest Green Rovers and signed a long-term contract at the Weston Homes Stadium.

His appointment marks his first Football League role since retiring as a player in 2011, having played for the likes of Crewe, Derby County, Birmingham, Leicester and Blackburn Rovers.

The former Wales international and media pundit will take charge of Peterborough for the first time when they host Ipswich Town U21s in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Speaking at his first press conference, Savage said hoped his side would 'stick four or five past Ipswich' to give them confidence ahead of their league trip to Leicester City a week tomorrow.

John McGreal's side are competing in the EFL Trophy for the first time and were comfortably beaten 6-0 at Luton Town in their opening group game last month.
