Leeds can finally complete the signing of Jean-Philippe Mateta, six years after missing out on him to Crystal Palace.
Signing a backup striker could be one of Leeds' priorities in 2027 as they look to add quality competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The former Everton forward has had a lot of luck when it comes to injuries since his move to Leeds, but there's no guarantee that continues, given his previous injury record.
Lukas Nmecha is another option for Leeds, but if they want to push on to European football, he might not be the answer.
The Yorkshire club were being linked with moves to sign new centre-forwards in the summer transfer window, but failed to get a deal over the line.
One striker who is likely to be on the move next summer is Mateta, and he's a player Leeds have an historic interest in.
According to talkSPORT, back in 2021, Crystal Palace beat Leeds to the signing of Mateta from Bundesliga side Mainz.
The Eagles initially signed the French striker on an 18-month loan deal before they later made the move permanent.
Mateta's future has been up in the air of late, almost leaving the club on multiple occasions over the last year or so.
With his contract expiring next summer, it feels unlikely that he's going to put pen to paper and renew his deal.
This would give Leeds the opportunity to swoop in and sign one of their previous targets on a free transfer.
As mentioned, Leeds could be pushing for the European places this season after an impressive start, and Mateta, who has been described as 'one of Europe's best strikers' and 'one of the best forwards around', could be the perfect free addition.

Mateta already has experience playing in Europe, so if Leeds do manage to qualify, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, he could be a perfect signing on a free transfer.
The Crystal Palace star has been recognised by France at national team level, which is a huge achievement given their number of attacking stars.
Mateta and Calvert-Lewin, as a partnership or providing competition for each other, would be some of the best options in the Premier League.
Mateta might have better offers, given he's available on a free transfer, but Leeds should be at least asking the question.
