Ipswich Town captain Dara O’Shea will miss the upcoming Republic of Ireland’s Nations League fixture against Israel in Serbia on Sunday as he prepares for the birth of his child, but he could still be involved, it’s been reported. The defender, who has captained the Boys in Green throughout the current international break, did not travel with the squad after his wife went into labour. Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed O’Shea’s absence while offering his congratulations to the Town skipper.

Speaking ahead of the match, Hallgrimsson joked:

“Hopefully it will be a good centre-back for Ireland in 16 years. The absence ends a demanding international window for O’Shea, who has been at the forefront of Ireland’s efforts during a series of emotionally charged and closely-scrutinised fixtures.”

O’Shea Leads During Difficult International Break

The 48-cap defender has been Ireland’s stand-in captain throughout the break and has shouldered additional responsibility during a period that Hallgrimsson admits has tested the entire squad. Ireland’s campaign began with a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to Kosovo before a convincing 3-0 victory over Israel in Hungary. They then followed up with a hard-earned 2-2 draw against Austria in Dublin in midweek.

O’Shea completed the full 90 minutes in all three matches, demonstrating the leadership and resilience that have also made him a key figure for Ipswich Town. With the centre-half now absent for Ireland’s final match of the break, his contribution across the previous fixtures has been significant both on and off the field.

Hallgrimsson Hails Squad Togetherness

Despite mixed results, Hallgrimsson believes the greatest achievement of this international camp has been the way his players have stuck together through a difficult period. The Ireland manager spoke passionately about the spirit within the group and the challenges they have overcome during the past fortnight.

“Surviving this camp, coming out of it together as one would be a massive win for me. That is coming from my heart.Everything this team has gone through, the criticism, surviving as a group after this game would be a big win for me and the group and the FAI. A big, big win, if we get through this undamaged. From the coach, obviously by having another three points would be more probably than I could have asked for before the camp, knowing what was to come.”

The Icelandic coach believes the experiences of the camp will ultimately benefit the squad in the years ahead.

‘Bond of Brothers’ Stronger Than Ever

Hallgrimsson repeatedly returned to the theme of unity and believes the adversity faced by the players has strengthened relationships within the squad.

“The most pleasing thing has been the togetherness and what they have done for each other. They have done it with respect for each other. This bond of brothers will be stronger than others. All the obstacles we face in the future will be less.”

The manager highlighted O’Shea’s family situation as an example of how the squad has dealt calmly with potentially stressful circumstances.

“For example, Dara O’Shea said to me before the game and it was solved in five minutes. Normally they would have been stressed and anxious but for us it was a simple problem. We deal with it and move on.”

Hallgrimsson believes the lessons learned during this international break could prove invaluable for Ireland moving forward.

“This camp, when we look back, will be the moment we grew the most, when we stepped up as leaders and stuck together.”

Focus Shifts Back to Family

While Ireland will have to cope without one of their most experienced defenders against Israel, there is little doubt where O’Shea’s priorities lie. The Ipswich skipper has played every minute of Ireland’s three matches during the break and has led by example throughout a challenging period. Now, however, football takes a back seat as he prepares to welcome a new addition to his family. But he could still feature for the Irish

Town supporters and Ireland fans alike will undoubtedly be wishing O’Shea and his family well as they celebrate a moment far more important than any result on the pitch.
