Birmingham City will already be thinking beyond this season with late loan addition: Opinion

Birmingham City will already be considering a permanent move for late loan addition Liam Millar after his start at St Andrews.

Birmingham City brought in seven players during the summer transfer window. Their last addition was loanee Liam Millar who joined from Hull City and has made an immediate impact with BCFC.

The Canadian has made four Championship appearances, all starts, and has already registered one goal and three assists in 322 minutes. His 7.82 FotMob rating underlines how quickly he has settled, while three of his four performances have produced ratings of 7.8 or higher.

Millar’s recent form has been particularly impressive. He scored against Middlesbrough and provided two assists in the 2-1 win at Derby, having also registered an assist against Norwich, meaning he has contributed directly to four goals in his last three league appearances.

That is significant for a Birmingham side who have generally been difficult to beat without being especially prolific. They have scored 12 goals in eight league games and sit 10th, with five draws contributing heavily to their position outside the play-off places.

Millar is already changing Birmingham games

The Derby victory is the clearest evidence of what Millar can bring to Chris Davies’ side. He created two goals, earned an 8.5 FotMob rating and helped Birmingham claim an important away victory.

His numbers are not simply built around goals and assists, either. FotMob places him in the 74th percentile for chances created and 63rd for both shot attempts and defensive contributions among attacking midfielders and wingers.

Millar can operate as a left winger, left wing-back, left midfielder or attacking midfielder, while his ability to play on the left despite being right-footed gives Birmingham another dimension. His versatility could become increasingly valuable as the season develops.

As the season goes on, BCFC will be happier and happier to have beaten their Championship rivals to the signing of Millar. It is early days but he is looking like a player capable of taking Birmingham to the next level.

Is a permanent move on the cards for Birmingham City?

There is also an interesting longer-term question developing. Millar remains a Hull player, with his contract currently running until June 2027 and reports suggesting the Premier League club have an option for another year.

That makes any permanent deal more complicated, particularly if his current form continues. Hull only allowed him to leave after he had scored the winner in their Premier League victory at Coventry, so there was clearly still value in the 27-year-old.

Appearances 38

Goals 3

Assists 5

Chances Created 31

For Birmingham, however, his current form makes the situation worth monitoring. A permanent move is worth exploring if Millar continues producing at this rate.

Four matches is still a very small sample, and Birmingham should not make conclusions about a permanent deal based solely on September. But if the next six weeks resemble the first four, Millar could turn from a useful season-long loan into a player Birmingham actively want to keep beyond June.

Their next opportunity to assess that impact comes against West Brom on October 10, before matches against Preston North End and QPR. Those fixtures will provide a bigger test of whether Millar’s explosive start is the beginning of a sustained run or simply an excellent opening spell.
