Johnson and O’Brien add more minutes on Everton international duty

Brennan Johnson and Jake O’Brien both added significant minutes to their international workloads on Sunday night as Everton continued to be well represented in the Nations League.

Johnson started for Wales and played 76 minutes of their 1-0 defeat against Denmark in Cardiff, while O’Brien completed the full game as the Republic of Ireland drew 1-1 with Israel in Serbia.

Both had been highlighted in our preview of Sunday night’s Everton internationals, with David Moyes now hoping to welcome the pair back from senior international duty without any fitness concerns.

Johnson starts as Wales lose to Denmark

Johnson was named in Craig Bellamy’s starting XI against Denmark and remained on the pitch until the 76th minute.

The Everton forward had already been substituted by the time the decisive moment arrived. Rasmus Højlund converted a penalty to give Denmark a 1-0 victory and leave Wales with a third defeat in four Nations League matches.

Everton goalkeeper Tom King was also part of the Wales squad but remained an unused substitute.

O’Brien, meanwhile, started for the Republic of Ireland and completed the full 90 minutes as Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side were held to a 1-1 draw by Israel at the TSC Arena in Bačka Topola.

Troy Parrott put Ireland ahead from the penalty spot before half-time, but Dor Peretz equalised early in the second half. Ireland were unable to find a winner and remain third in Nations League Group B3.

For Everton, the more immediate positive is that Johnson and O’Brien have come through another night of international football after adding substantial minutes during the break.

Their latest appearances will also be added to our Everton international duty tracker, with Moyes gradually moving closer to having his international contingent back at Finch Farm ahead of the Premier League’s return.
