The Newcastle United defender earned his ninth cap for his country while Nick Woltemade who is currently on loan at Juventus, came off the bench in the second half. Odysseas Vlachodimos, who is on loan from Newcastle at Sevilla, was an unused substitute for Greece.
The result leaves Germany sitting three points adrift from Greece and the Netherlands to advance to the knockout stages. Germany face Serbia and the Netherlands to finish their group fixtures in the November international break.

How the German media rated Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade
Germany have only picked up one victory so far under new manager Jurgen Klopp but Thiaw has impressed defensively in his two starts under the former Liverpool head coach.
And his performance against Greece was once again praised by the German media.
Bulinews handed him a 7/10 rating, a score only bettered by Derry Scherhant with 7.5/10.

Bulinews wrote on Thiaw: “The Newcastle United man won the vast majority of his duels and maintained a strong pass completion rate. Could have had a goal from a set-piece if not for getting his feet in a muddle.”
Bild handed Thiaw a 3/6 rating while Woltemade was handed a 4/6 rating by the same outlet. The lower the number, the better in Bild’s rating system.
Bulinews handed Woltemade a 5/10 rating for his substitute performance, writing: “Hard to criticise as the service reduced when he entered the game. Better days to come.”
