Sunderland have already made their long-term intentions clear for Matty Young amid reported interest from Liverpool

Sunderland sporting director Florent Ghisolfi has already made the club’s long-term plans for Matty Young clear amid reported transfer interest from Liverpool.

Journalist Alan Nixon, writing via his Patreon platform, reports that Liverpool are monitoring the 19-year-old goalkeeper during his season-long loan spell at Huddersfield Town and believe he has the potential to become a future number one.

Sunderland, though, strengthened their position considerably when Young signed a new contract until 2030 in May. Speaking when that agreement was announced, Ghisolfi outlined a clear pathway for the academy graduate. “We are very happy that Matty has committed his future to Sunderland because we believe we are building something important together,” Ghisolfi said.

“For a goalkeeper of his age to already have so much senior experience is exceptional, and his progress over the last two seasons has been outstanding. Our ambition is for Sunderland to be the best environment in England for goalkeepers, with a clear pathway, strong competition, and the opportunity to develop through senior football. Matty has embraced every challenge so far, and the next step for him will be to continue his progression at a higher level next season.”

That next step became Huddersfield, with Sunderland opting to test Young in League One following two seasons with Salford City. Ghisolfi again described the move as part of Young’s development, saying the loan represented “another crucial step in his ongoing development as a top young goalkeeper”. Liverpool’s reported interest therefore arrives with Sunderland having already committed Young to a long-term deal and publicly mapped out a pathway designed to eventually take him towards their first team.
