Daizen Maeda played the first 64 minutes as Japan beat New Zealand 2-1 in the Kirin Cup final in Tokyo.

The forward, winning his 33rd full cap in his team’s final game of the international break, was involved in Japan’s opening goal in the 27th minute, his run down the left and cross eventually leading to Ayase Ueda scoring.

The All Whites levelled soon afterwards through Ben Old, former Blues loanee Chris Wood assisting, but Ritsu Doan netted the winner on 71.

On-loan Blues keeper Henry Gray among was among New Zealand’s unused substitutes.
