The Leeds wonderkid no one is talking about – Farke has a Joe Rodon replacement

Joe Rodon’s injury has left Daniel Farke with a problem he probably would rather not have had this early in the season.

The Leeds United defender is expected to miss several weeks with a hamstring problem, leaving Farke with fewer options in central defence as the Premier League campaign gathers pace.

No shortage of senior players can step in. Jaka Bijol, James Justin and Nico Elvedi are all options, while Tarik Muharemovic has quickly established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.

But Rodon’s absence could also highlight a player Leeds fans may not have been paying much attention to yet.

His name is Jacob Howard.

Howard is quietly making his way through the academy

It would be premature to suggest the 17-year-old is about to walk into Farke’s Premier League side. That is not the point.

Howard is one of the more interesting young centre-backs coming through at Thorp Arch, and his progress has been rapid enough to make him worth watching.

He was already featuring for the Under 21s at 16 last season and has continued to play above his age group. Leeds used him in the centre of a back three alongside Louis Enahoro-Marcus and Jonny Howson in the Under 21s’ Premier League Cup opener this season.

He also has international pedigree.

Howard has represented England at youth level and scored for the Under 17s against Australia in November 2025. On that occasion, Leeds noted that he had already made six appearances for their Under 18s that season, as well as two for the Under 21s.

That progression is what makes his situation interesting.

Rodon’s injury could accelerate his development

Howard signed his first professional contract with Leeds in July, extending his stay at the club and giving the youngster a clear pathway to continue developing at Thorp Arch.

He is still a long way from being a genuine Premier League option, and Leeds will have no reason to rush him.

But injuries have a habit of changing plans.

Rodon’s absence means Farke will need to manage his centre-back options carefully over the coming weeks. If Leeds can keep their senior defenders fit, Howard can keep developing with the Under 21s without unnecessary pressure.

And if the opportunity eventually comes, he should already be familiar with the demands of playing in a back three.

That is the intriguing part.

Leeds may already have a potential long-term answer in their academy, though few supporters know his name.

Howard is not Rodon’s replacement today. But if his development continues at its current pace, he could eventually give Farke another homegrown option in the position.

For now, Leeds fans might want to remember his name.
