It will be Newcastle’s first Premier League trip to the Coventry Building Society Arena following the Sky Blues’ return to the top flight after 25 years away.

The Magpies have been dealing with an injury crisis during the extended international break with several first-team players out injured. Paired with the players on international duty, Matthias Jaissle’s side trained with just six first-team players earlier this week in a session supplemented by Under-21s players.

Newcastle will expect to have Nico Gonzalez and Joelinton back for the trip to Coventry after the duo returned to first-team training following their respective injuries. But they have recently been dealt two fresh concerns after Lewis Miley and Ewen Jaouen withdrew from their respective England and France Under-21s squads.

Elsewhere in the squad, Anthony Elanga, William Osula, Dan Burn, Jacob Ramsey and Tino Livramento have been suffering from various injury issues and could all miss the trip to Coventry. Burn is understood to be the closest to a return of that group but hasn’t featured in a competitive match so far this season.

Coventry also have a number of injuries to deal with over the international break.

Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Josh Eccles, Luke Woolfenden and Milan van Ewijk are all closing in on returning from their respective injuries. Haji Wright is likely to miss the Newcastle match with Frank Lampard stating the forward is on course to return to action by the end of the month.

Aurele Amenda is a long-term absentee for Coventry, who will also be without Taiwo Awoniyi due to suspension. The striker was shown a straight red card in Coventry’s 5-0 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last month for violent conduct.

As red card suspensions are not competition-specific, Awoniyi served the first match of his suspension in the Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa before missing the Premier League match against his former club Nottingham Forest before the international break.

He will serve the final match of his suspension against Newcastle when Premier League football returns.
