Sir Jim Ratcliffe faces race against time to prevent Man Utd from losing academy star

Manchester United could be powerless to prevent one of their brightest academy prospects from walking away from the club.

JJ Gabriel dropped a bombshell last month when he informed United of his desire to leave Old Trafford.

The teenage sensation has now turned 16 and could potentially join an overseas club if he obtains an EU passport.

[According to The Telegraph](http://The nightmare scenariohttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2026/10/06/man-utd-jj-gabriel-nightmare-scenario/), Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe took a personal interest in this situation but it may already be too late for him to intervene.

Gabriel was notably included in a Man United squad picture released yesterday.

However, the picture is understood to have been taken last month before he informed the club of his desire to leave.

United had been preparing to hand the highly-rated youngster his first-team debut in the Carabao Cup against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Instead, Gabriel reportedly missed training before informing the club of his intention to leave.

United have gone to considerable lengths to convince their prized academy prospect to stay.

The club fast-tracked Gabriel through both the Under-18s and Under-21s, giving him opportunities well beyond his age group.

He also regularly trained with the first team, allowing him to work closely with both former manager Ruben Amorim and current head coach Michael Carrick.

Gabriel was even given the extraordinary opportunity to meet United legend Sir Alex Ferguson.

Losing such a highly-rated prospect would be a nightmare for United, particularly given his potential to become one of the best players of his generation.

However, even if Gabriel’s departure would represent a huge blow, a club as powerful as United cannot allow itself to be held to ransom by the representatives of a teenager.
