Leeds United teenager Kai Morrall is one of multiple academy talents that have been brought to Thorp Arch with a view of strengthening the youth setup.
The Whites have a long-term goal of Premier League prosperity, which centres around Daniel Farke’s ongoing progress in the top flight.
However, rebuilding the academy to former glory is another crucial aspect. The 49ers, though, have put plenty of focus into that facet.
The Guardian tip Kai Morrall for Leeds United breakout after switch from Liverpool
As Leeds look to produce Yorkshire-based talent consistently, the club have also supplemented that with additions from rival academies.
These players, from high-end youth teams, clearly see Thorp Arch as a better stepping stone to senior football, hopefully in the Premier League.
One of those is Republic of Ireland youth international Kai Morrall, who joined from Liverpool in December 2025.

The Guardian’s ‘Next Generation 2026’ piece covers a standout talent from each club born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010
“After eight years in Liverpool’s academy, Morrall joined the Leeds youth setup last December. He was highly regarded at Anfield – and frequently scouted by Premier League rivals – but believes the move to Elland Road can facilitate a faster pathway to first-team football,” Lousie Taylor wrote.
“The Ireland Under-16 international – who is also eligible to play for Jamaica – is a highly versatile player blessed with impressive vision, balance, pace and creativity. Although right wing is the technically assured Morrall’s favourite position he has also thrived at full-back, wide on the left and as a No 10. He made his debut for Leeds Under-18s in May and in September was named in Ireland’s Under-17 squad.”
Leeds United need steady stream of talented players from academy
As a romantic, you always want to see academy players breaking through into the squad every season and seeing them shine.
Even though he’s cpme from Liverpool’s setup, it does feel more rewarding seeing these players in your squad.
And, in a more brutal sense, the financial benefits that Leeds will have from a stronger base of academy players is huge. These players are ‘pure profit’ from a monetary sense, so even if they struggle to make the grade, they’re still worth a lot to us.
It doesn’t cost as much as overhauling the senior squad, and could save the club millions if players like Morrall break through the ranks.
