Tottenham Hotspur have made a disastrous start to the 2026-27 season, amassing only two points from their opening five games. This has left Spurs rock bottom of the Premier League table, despite ENIC backing Roberto De Zerbi with more than £300m worth of new signings during the summer transfer window.
Roberto De Zerbi and the club felt that there were some sweeping changes needed in the transfer window. Addressing the issue of creativity and scoring goals were among the priorities, which led to the Lilywhites signing Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk. Savio and Marmoush have failed to make any goal contribution in the Premier League, while Mudryk got injured after a cameo appearance against Nottingham Forest in September.
Tottenham’s winter plans revealed
An underwhelming start to the new Premier League season means that Spurs might be forced to add more firepower to their squad during the upcoming winter transfer window. The Lewis Family injected a further £120m into the club in mid-September as part of their pledge to back De Zerbi this season.
While the ownership’s financial actions demonstrate unwavering commitment behind the scenes, it does not look like Spurs are going to spend a fortune in the winter window. According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham chiefs are planning to address some issues in their squad but are not prepared to commit a similar amount of money to what they did in the summer. The North Londoners have identified bolstering their attacking ranks following their problems up top.
With Richarlison set to be offloaded in January after a total breakdown in the relationship with the board, De Zerbi will have Dominic Solanke and Omar Marmoush as the only striker options. The duo are still waiting for their first league goal involvement of the season, with Solanke, in particular, struggling to make any sort of impact thus far.
The report adds the striker unit is likely to be at the apex of De Zerbi’s wishlist for mid-season reinforcements, although any lucrative deals are likely to be beyond the club’s reach.
Spurs must look to sign Crystal Palace star Jean-Philippe Mateta
Tottenham need experience, quality, and someone who can make an immediate impact up top, and there is a very obvious answer to solving that issue.
Jean-Philippe Mateta will reportedly not sign a new deal and will leave Crystal Palace in 2027. The primary question is whether Crystal Palace cash him in January or let him leave as a free agent next summer.
Several clubs in the Premier League and across Europe have been keeping a close eye on Mateta’s situation, including Tottenham. The French striker has not managed to make any sort of impact under new manager Pierre Sage this season due to an injury. Overall, he has been a consistent goalscorer for the Eagles, netting 42 league goals across three seasons. It was the 29-year-old’s strike that helped Palace beat Rayo Vallecano in the Europa Conference League final in May.
If the South London club open the door to a January exit for Mateta, Tottenham should be all over his signing.
