Olympiacos spectacular stadium plans advance as Marinakis drives $280 million project image
Olympiacos has moved a significant step closer to a spectacular new home, with a privately funded stadium project expected to exceed €250million ($280 million) gaining fresh momentum following talks between club president Evangelos Marinakis and the Greek government.
Marinakis met Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on Tuesday, October 6, with the government committing to initiate the legislative changes needed to advance the proposed redevelopment of Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium, according to Greek newspaper Ta Nea.
The meeting represented an encouraging breakthrough in an ambitious project designed to transform the matchday experience and create a destination that extends well beyond soccer.
Indeed, the proposed venue in Piraeus, the port city neighboring Athens, would accommodate more than 53,000 fans and combine a larger stadium with extensive hospitality, entertainment and dining facilities.

What would the new Olympiacos stadium include?
Plans call for a stadium spanning four levels, rising approximately 171 feet and featuring a climate-responsive roof covering roughly 323,000 square feet.
Moving supporters around the venue is a central part of the design, with 32 escalators, 60 elevators, 20 double staircases and 70 access gates planned.
For American sports fans familiar with the premium amenities of modern NFL and MLB venues, the hospitality proposals will sound recognisable: more than 100 luxury suites, alongside approximately 54,000 square feet of premium hospitality space.
Technology would also play a prominent role. The proposal includes around 108,000 square feet of LED displays, with the installation intended to create Europe's largest multifaceted sports display.
The plans also include a substantial media centre with a 320-seat auditorium and dedicated journalist workspaces, reflecting the ambition to accommodate major international sporting events.
A destination beyond matchday
The investment’s potential impact reaches beyond the stands.
Around 54,000 square feet would be dedicated to restaurants, cafes and retail kiosks, giving supporters, residents and visitors reasons to use the development throughout the week.
Proposed improvements to surrounding traffic arrangements and parking facilities with thousands of spaces are also intended to make access easier on game days.
That broader approach could make the stadium an asset for Piraeus as well as Olympiacos, bringing soccer, hospitality and leisure together in one development.
The ambitious project underlines Marinakis' commitment to Olympiacos, combining a world-class home for supporters with a lasting investment in the future of Piraeus
What happens next?
The government's commitment to advance the necessary legislation is an important step, although it should not be confused with a completed permitting process or the start of construction..
Nevertheless, Tuesday's meeting provides fresh momentum for a development with the potential to become a major landmark for Greek soccer.
When delivered, the new Karaiskakis would give Olympiacos a home that matches the scale of its ambitions and give Piraeus a destination with appeal far beyond the final whistle.
