Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson does not like the nickname given to him by former Sweden international Freddie Ljungberg.

The Yorkshire giants brought in Gudmundsson from Lille in the summer of 2025, following promotion, and he quickly managed to establish himself as a regular in Daniel Farke’s starting lineup.

In the summer, the Swedish international was linked with Premier League giants Chelsea as replacement for Marc Cucurella, who left the Blues to join Real Madrid, but a move never materialised.

Gudmundsson started the last three league games for Leeds before he joined the Sweden national team during the international break and he featured in all four of their games in the Nations League, including the game against Romania on Monday.

During the game former Swedish international Ljungberg often referred to Gudmundsson as ‘Gudis’ which the Leeds star admits that he does not prefer to be called.

He pointed out that his father, Niklas Gudmundsson, who played for the Sweden national team, used to be referred to as ‘Gudis’, while adding that his father can keep that nickname.

When asked whether ‘Gudis’ is an established nickname of his, Gudmundsson was quoted as saying by Swedish daily Expressen: “No, I hope not.

“It is more my dad who has been called that.

“He can keep it. I am happy with what I have.”

The Leeds defender added that he has a good relationship with Ljungberg and urged the interviewer to tell the former Arsenal star to stop calling him ‘Gudis’.

When asked whether he has a good relationship with Ljungberg, he added: “Of course, we talk a little when I am in Stockholm.

“Obviously, he is from Halmstad, so naturally we chat a bit about that. It is fun.

“Yes, you can do that [tell Ljungberg to stop calling him ‘Gudis’].

“That would be great”.

Gudmundsson was not happy with the referee during Sweden’s game against Poland, where he lost his contact lens after a collision with a Polish defender.

The left-back will now return to Elland Road to join with the rest of the Leeds squad to prepare for the game against Arsenal at the weekend.
