Sheffield United endured a rather chaotic summer transfer window, with off-field issues at Bramall Lane certainly impacting Chris Wilder's latest rebuild at the club.
The Blades finished the 2025/26 season in an extremely underwhelming 13th place, with Wilder initially able to move his side away from relegation danger after a disastrous six-game spell under Ruben Selles, before the final months of the campaign were blighted by inconsistency.
As well as such mixed fortunes on the pitch, a major talking point was the immediate future of star playmaker, Gus Hamer, who, in the eyes of many, certainly lived up to his price tag in the Steel City after joining from Coventry City in 2023.
However, with the 29-year-old recently making a return to the West Midlands - at a loss in United's financial books - it currently remains to be seen which club, or whether both, will emerge as the 'victors' in their summer dealing.

Hamer, of course, shone during his first spell with Coventry after moving from PEC Zwolle for £1.5m in July 2020, even though for much of that period, the Dutch-Brazilian was also operating in a deeper midfield role.
His influence on the Sky Blues' run to the 2022/23 Championship play-off final, alongside Viktor Gyökeres, could not be understated though, and after a run of nine goals and 10 assists, the playmaker moved to the Blades for £15m on a four-year contract in August 2023.
Hamer was certainly a beacon of light for the club in 2023/24 as they finished rock-bottom of the Premier League with a double-figure tally of goal contributions, which, unsurprisingly, led to many rounds of exit talk during his time in S2.
And even though he was moved into the slightly unnatural left midfield position in 2024/25, Hamer ended the campaign as the Championship's Player of the Season despite only accruing 16 goal contributions, with United's play-off final loss to Sunderland opening the door for an even more likely departure.
Gus Hamer's commitment to Sheffield United wasn't impacted by transfer discourse

Despite only making 27 Championship starts last season, Hamer still had a particularly strong influence on proceedings with the Blades as he racked up five goals and 13 assists.
Again, though, he primarily operated on the left-wing rather than the 'number 10' role which he also flourished in previously, and with there being less than 18 months on his contract post-January, exit talk intensified.
Whilst not many could have begrudged Hamer from wanting to pursue a different challenge as Wilder looked to reshape the squad in the Steel City himself, Hamer's commitment to the cause was never in doubt.

"You've seen his actions, you've seen his attitude towards the game," said the United boss after the club's pre-season clash with VfL Bochum. "He's not come to me and said he doesn't want to play."
Coventry City will hope for a strong Gus Hamer impact after £6m reunion deal

Coventry's return to the Premier League after 25 years away has been well-documented, but it's fair to say that Frank Lampard hasn't seen the best of his creative outlets so far this term, irrespective of whether they were pre-existing squad members or new arrivals.
Hamer's return set the Sky Blues back £6m, which, in modern football, isn't the biggest sum in the world, but it has been a slow return to CV6 for the experienced figure.
Lampard's side, of course, haven't had the kindest of starts with encounters against Arsenal, Manchester City and free-scoring Brighton all in their first five games, with Hamer only playing 32 league minutes whilst playing the full 90 in their EFL Cup tie against Aston Villa last month.
It is early days, but supporters will be hoping to see Hamer showcase the form which he did under Mark Robins, as well as at Bramall Lane, for the fee to look inspired.
Sheffield United's creators need to step up after Gus Hamer exit

Whilst many would argue that a £6m recoup for a player of Hamer's age is still respectable with less than one year on his contract, Wilder will be hoping his creative outlets can step up to the mark in the coming weeks.
Romelle Donovan has impressed on loan from Brentford, but United have averaged just 1.1 goals per match and created 12 big chances in their first eight games, with the latter metric being the fifth-worst in the Championship so far.

127 touches in the opposition box is also the lowest tally of any second tier side, which further backs up the point that there is a long way to go for the club to feel they have benefited from the sale in a footballing sense.
