Newcastle United have been linked with a transfer bid for a gifted young defender in the Netherlands - will he wind up at St. James’ Park?
Although Newcastle have enjoyed a broadly positive start to life under Matthias Jaissle, there are still some kinks to be ironed out – not least in their defence, which has been among the less impressive units in the Premier League so far despite results.

Only five teams have conceded more goals so far or permitted a higher xG against them, and shoring up the back line may soon become a priority if performances don’t improve. Injuries have played their part, but it’s not especially surprising to see new stories which suggest that the Magpies could be active in the transfer window as they search for solutions – one of which could be a talented young Dutchman making his name with Ajax.
The teenage defender on Newcastle’s radar – reports

According to local newspaper The Chronicle, Newcastle United have been tracking 19-year-old defender Aaron Bouwman, noting that the club are “actively looking” for a right-sided centre-half who can take over from the ageing Fabian Schär.
Bouwman only broke into Ajax’s first team last season, finishing the campaign with 12 first team appearances including two in the Champions League, but came into the new season as a starter – he played the full 90 minutes in each of his side’s first eight games.
The teenager’s run of minutes was ended in early September when he sustained multiple injuries during a 3-1 defeat to PSV. A collision with forward Ruben van Bommel forced Bouwman off and left him with a bruised lung and back, ruling him out until the end of the international break.
When he returns to action imminently, Newcastle’s scouts are likely to be in attendance. The 6’6” defender ticks a lot of boxes, not least in terms of his imposing physical stature – he’s just as robust on the ground as he is in the air and is far more technical than many similarly-proportioned centre-halves.
A natural ball-playing defender with an impressive passing range, Bouwman is also confident with the ball at his feet and capable of carrying the ball out from the back, which makes him ideal for a team who want to play the ball quickly upfield.
At the back, Bouwman is an aggressive defender who often goes looking for opportunities to make challenges. That his its upsides, and his average of 7.5 forced turnovers per league game so far this season is enormous, but can mean that he gets pulled out of position. That may be facet of his game that requires further development, but the natural qualities of an outstanding centre-half are all in place.
Newcastle’s interest is unsurprising given his apparent potential, although they are unlikely to be the only team taking notes. Around a year ago, when Bouwman was yet to establish himself in Ajax’s first team, a number of elite sides (including Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona) were alleged to be monitoring his progress. Some of them may still be keen.

Despite those early links with top-level sides, the rumour mill has been quite on Bouwman’s future over the past year – The Chronicle’s claims that Newcastle are tracking the defender represent the first time his name has cropped up in the mainstream media since 2025.
Their story claims that Ajax value Bouwman at around £6.7m, a figure that seems to be far too low given his talents and growing importance to the Dutch side’s first team. With Bouwman under contract until 2030, Ajax have plenty of leverage and the price required to prise him away will almost certainly be considerably higher.
It’s not clear from The Chronicle’s reporting whether Bouwman is a target for the January transfer window or for next summer, with the latter perhaps more likely unless Newcastle are willing to twist Ajax’s arm with an especially significant offer. Given his age and the fact that he would be signed as a long-term prospect rather than an immediate starter, a summer deal seems more plausible on paper.
With Schär’s contract due to expire at the end of the year, it’s more likely that Newcastle make their biggest moves at the back around that time as well, when the need becomes more acute and the wage bill a little bit lighter.
Newcastle are expected to try to avoid heavy spending in January unless their situation demands it, so Bouwman is probably a player that the Magpies will observe from a distance until the right time comes, but they may have a minor advantage in the form of their good working relationship with Ajax after successful negotiations to sign midfielder Sean Steur with them over the summer.
Whenever the bidding begins, Bouwman is a hugely gifted player whose star is rising rapidly, and at his current rate of progress it would be long before talk of a move intensifies. Newcastle seem likely to be in the mix as it stands.
