Newcastle United “Favourites” To Sign Lyon Starlet Morton
Newcastle United are being tipped by Keith Wyness at Football Insider to pip Nottingham Forest to the signing of Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Tyler Morton.
The 23-year-old would be part of a “midfield overhaul” next season.
Wyness claims that Forest could bid for Tyler in January but believes that any move could be delayed until next summer, making Newcastle “favourites”, especially with their youth-oriented transfer policy.
Morton Is a “Hot Talent”
Morton joined Liverpool at the age of seven and progressed through the age groups at the academy, reaching the FA Youth Cup final in 2021. He made four appearances for Liverpool’s senior team and got his first taste of Champions League football in a 2-0 win over Porto.
Loans to Blackburn Rovers and Hull City followed, before he moved to Lyon in August 2025 in a €15m (£12.7m) deal.
He has also played for the England youth teams, playing for the Under-20s and Under-21s.
He has excelled since joining Lyon. Last season, he made 29 appearances in Ligue Un, scoring two goals and registering two assists, and his performances caught the eye, particularly defensively.
Last season he made 125 defensive contributions, 128 recoveries, and helped his team keep 10 clean sheets.
Wyness believes that Newcastle are favourites to sign “hot talent” Morton because he would get more game time on Tyneside.
Speaking on the Inside Track podcast (via Inside Football), he said: “It’ll be all about minutes for the kid. Who can offer the best solution going forward?
“Right now, as I see it, I would think Forest are favourites for January, but I think Newcastle will probably be the favourites when they have a revised midfield in the summer.
“I don’t think they’ll make the move in January, but that’s where I assess things as they sit right now.
“He’s a hot talent that everybody’s after, but as usual, it’s minutes, and he wants to see his pathway, and I think Newcastle could offer that for him. He’d be well received up there at St James’.”
Newcastle already “working on deal”
If the rumours are to be believed, Newcastle are already “working on a deal” for Morton.
Mick Brown, former chief scout at Manchester United, told Football Insider that scouts from Newcastle had travelled to France to watch Morton in action.
According to Brown, they know all the “pros and cons” of the midfielder’s game.
But Morton’s former club could throw a spanner in the works. Pete O’Rourke claimed last week that Liverpool are “keeping tabs” on Morton’s progress.
He is “one of many options” the Reds are considering as they search for a new number six.
