Arsenal U21s set to return to action against Sunderland

Following the lengthy international break, Arsenal U21s are set to return to action on Saturday with a home game against Sunderland.

Although they managed to overcome Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy, David Horseman’s side are still awaiting their first league victory of the campaign.

So far the young Gunners have drawn three and lost one of their four league matches and Horseman will be hoping for greater ruthlessness from his team this time out.

With the first-team also in action on Saturday, Horseman could be without Max Dowman even if he is available after injury, while a decision will also have to be made regarding Marli Salmon.

U18s midfielders Maalik Hashi and Emerson Nwaneri trained with the U21s this week and it will be interesting to see whether both players will receive another chance to impress for the older age group.

Hashi’s flair makes him an exciting prospect, while Nwaneri has made an impact in various creative and attacking positions at U18 level.

Sunderland have won their last two games in Premier League 2, with midfielder Tom Proctor potentially a player to look out for.

Arsenal U19s face Lille in the UEFA Youth League next week, with some members of the U21s squad also eligible to feature in that game. Therefore, the clash against Sunderland could be a good opportunity to gain sharpness and momentum.
