Frank Lampard has revealed that he often watches re-runs of last season’s outstanding 3-1 home victory over Middlesbrough as inspiration to drive success in the Premier League.
The emphatic victory by the Sky Blues in February was the last time the club played a Monday game under the lights at the CBS Arena – a fact that will hopefully be a good omen going into next week’s Monday night football clash with another North East side, Newcastle United.
The win over Boro came at a time of extreme pressure for the players who’d experienced a mid-term slump, losing a ten point lead at the top of the Championship to sit second behind Kim Hellberg’s men going into the fixture. The three points took them back to the summit where they pulled away again to take the title and gain promotion as clear champions.
Asked if fond memories of that match can ignite City’s home season where they are yet to win after defeats to Hull and Brighton, starting against the Magpies, Lampard said: “Well, we’ll try to and the Middlesbrough game is a good reference anyway, even with the nice coincidence or whatever you want to call it because the players’ performance, which was under a little bit of pressure, and that the game generated a real crowd performance. And everything went hand in hand.
“It’s a match I often refer to because there was a bit of really good building into the game in terms of training where there was some tension, good tension, and the players played with it.
“I watch parts of that game back regularly because it was our outstanding game last year considering what was on it. And now we have to do 38 versions of that kind of feeling to get things nailed on, and we hope we can do that in front of our home fans.”
