Promotion-winning winger outlines one Wolves ‘must’ after strong start

Mat Jarvis has reflected on Wolves’ start to the Championship season.

Wolves have so far lived up to expectations in their bid for an immediate return to the Premier League, according to former winger Matt Jarvis.

The Old Gold return to Championship action this weekend after the international break with a trip north to fellow early high-flyers Middlesbrough.

Jarvis, who helped Wolves win promotion to the top flight in 2009, believes Cesar Peixoto’s side have shown their quality early in the campaign.

“100 per cent, they would have taken it,” Jarvis said in an interview with Live Football Tickets.

“They started the season really well. I think there is going to be a lot of pressure on them, a bit like West Ham, really.

“The expectation levels are high. You got relegated from the Premier League but are fully expected to be right up there, getting promoted again.

“I think they’ve shown that with the quality right from the off. They’ve had some really good results and really good performances.

“They had a little dip, and then they’ve shown again that they have to go and show their quality, which is exactly what they executed against West Brom.

“They’ll be really pleased with this. I think the fans will, and the manager obviously will, because he’s coming into this new, fresh Championship, which is not an easy league to come into when you haven’t experienced it before. So they’ll be delighted with their start.”

Wolves sit three points behind leaders Swansea with a game in hand as they prepare to return to action this weekend.

Jarvis knows all too well the twists and turns of a long Championship season, but believes a top-two finish should be the target for Wolves as they look to bounce straight back to the Premier League.

He added: “Promotion is a good season. Whatever that looks like, again, I put my players’ hat on. Play-offs are only great if you win them. You don’t want to be in them otherwise, and you can’t guarantee that.

“For me, getting promoted as champions or second, and just going up and having your summer holiday, being able to unwind and enjoy the rest of that summer knowing that you’re going to be playing in the Premier League, is a must.

“For Wolves, promotion is a great season. Getting promoted in the top two would be an excellent season.”
