Real Madrid 'monitoring Scott McTominay Napoli talks as Man Utd interest cools due to strategy'

Scotland internationalist Scott McTominay is on the radar of Spanish giants Real Madrid, according to reports on the continent.

It is claimed that Real Madrid are monitoring McTominay’s contract talks with his current club Napoli. The Serie A side opened discussions with the 29-year-old and his representatives earlier this year over an extension to his deal, which expires in June 2028, but so far there has been no breakthrough.

McTominay moved to Napoli from Manchester United two years ago and was a talismanic figure as Gli Azzurri won the Scudetto for only the fourth time in their history the 2024/25 campaign. However, they failed to defend their crown last season and have started this term in underwhelming fashion under new manager Max Allegri.

McTominay remains an integral part of the Napoli set-up, although he has been absent for the past month after undergoing a minor heart procedure. He is expected to be back in action by November, if not sooner, with Napoli chiefs also planning an active winter transfer window to help bolster their squad.

Napoli want to sort out McTominay’s long-term future sooner rather than later. With less than 18 months left on his contract, the Italian side would look to cash in on a player they spent £25 million should it become clear that has ambitions of playing elsewhere.

Italian media outlet Tuttomercato claims that Real Madrid are admirers of McTominay and may make a move should the Napoli contract talks stall. Real are currently fourth in Spain’s La Liga, five points behind leaders Barcelona, and are already under pressure to improve their squad.

Their head coach Jose Mourinho worked with McTominay between 2016 and 2018 while he was manager of Manchester United and gave the player his senior debut against Arsenal nine years ago.

McTominay has since developed into one of Europe’s most admired midfielders and won 73 caps for Scotland, scoring 15 goals - including a spectacular overhead kick against Denmark that helped the national team qualify for last summer’s World Cup.

Man Utd have been sporadically linked with bringing McTominay back to Old Trafford, but reports this week have suggested that under current head coach Michael Carrick and the recruitment team, they are targeting a younger profile of player.
