Newcastle United: Jaissle Praises “Warrior” Joelinton
Newcastle United boss Matthias Jaissle revealed that midfield “warrior” Joelinton is “progressing well” after injury.
But speaking in his first press conference after the international break, Jaissle said he and his staff needed to be careful with the 30-year-old Brazilian’s “load management”.
He also confirmed that Newcastle were beaten by Middlesbrough in a behind closed doors friendly last weekend.
Newcastle play Coventry City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night.
Jaissle on Joelinton
Jaissle discussed Joelinton’s recovery from a thigh injury and reflected on the midfielder’s importance to the team.
“Joey is progressing well, he is doing better. We need to be smart in our load management.
“He has qualities on the ball and out of possession. He is a leader – his body language shows that.
“We need warriors in the team. We are really happy to have him back training with us.”
A video of a training session posted on Newcastle’s X page this week featured Joelinton, among others.
Jaissle on Newcastle’s Injury List
Jaissle confirmed that all of Newcastle’s players had returned from international duty mostly unscathed, and that he hopes to have a few of the nine injured players back in training for the game against Coventry.
Ewen Jaouen will miss out though, as he sustained a hamstring injury while away with France Under-21s. Jaissle said the 20-year-old will be out for “two months.”
“They [players on international duty] have returned. I have allowed some of them an extra day off. We will have a full group in tomorrow [Friday 9th].
“We are hopeful there will be three or four back from the nine missing against Hull City.”
Jaissle on Coventry City
Jaissle was under no illusions about the test Coventry pose. The Sky Blues won their first Premier League game of the season before the international break, beating Nottingham Forest 1-0.
Jaissle said this result showed the competitiveness of the league and claimed that Frank Lampard’s side had the “momentum” going into the game.
“Every team is capable of winning against every opponent. Coventry have the momentum, as they won their last match, and confidence.
“They also have quality and a clear playing style. If we perform at our best, then it will be difficult to beat us. We want to make it as difficult for them as possible.”
Newcastle Lose Friendly to Middlesbrough
Due to the long international break, Newcastle arranged a friendly with Middlesbrough at the KNOX training ground last weekend to get some minutes into legs. The Magpies are rumoured to have lost 1-0, although the score wasn’t confirmed.
Jaissle said that the game was played for “a few guys who were here but also for the young lads from the academy”.
Dan Burn and Anthony Elanga did not play, which means that both are extremely unlikely to play against Coventry. It seems that Joelinton did not participate either, but he could still play a part on Monday night.
