Andoni Iraola wants more from Alexander Isak after Liverpool winner at Bournemouth
The pair being forced to withdraw early from the Sweden and Netherlands squads respectively during the international break has prompted concerns over how Liverpool will line up in attack at Anfield.
Isak has started to show signs of the form that prompted the Reds to spend £125million on him last summer. He has scored four Premier League goals so far this season, including the winner against Bournemouth three weeks ago.
Gakpo, meanwhile, was heavily linked with a move to Man City during the summer transfer window and has a case of being Liverpool's best performing attacker with two goals and four assists across all competitions.
Isak sustained what was described as a minor thigh injury sustained during the 2-1 win over Romania in the Nations League and Gakpo picked up an ankle issue while playing for the Dutch against Serbia.
Speaking to beIN Sports earlier in the week, Iraola confirmed the pair were in a race against the clock to prove their fitness.
Liverpool are next in action on Sunday, when they welcome Man City to Anfield, and Iraola has given a fresh update on his injured forwards.
Speaking on Friday, the Liverpool boss said: “Yes, Alex Isak and Gakpo will not play, they are not ready unfortunately for us. They got injuries during the international break.
"You are always waiting hoping the doctor doesn't call you with bad news, but we have been unlucky. They are not going to be involved.
"Gakpo has an ankle injury, a matter of him dealing with the pain. A bad tackle I think. He is working but not for Sunday.
