Frankie Runham scored twice as Ipswich Town U21s were held to a 2-2 draw with West Brom at the JobServe Community Stadium in Colchester in the Premier League Cup this evening.

John McGreal's side went into this game off the back of their 4-1 defeat at League One side Peterborough United, as they were knocked out of the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

The young Blues went behind just six minutes in, when Charlie Wood fouled a Baggies player in the box and Ryan Colesby converted the spot kick.

However, Town reacted well, equalising two minutes later when Runham, who was playing in the number ten position, fired in a free-kick from 25 yards out.

Town had their tails up and duly took the lead in the 13th minute when Runham bagged his brace as Sid Eldred picked him out to his right and he finished into the bottom corner.

The former Chelsea youngster came close to a hat-trick five minutes later but his effort from just inside the box was well saved by the goalkeeper.

It was entertaining first half with Town threating when they went forward. But, just before half-time, the Baggies equalised through Remar McNeil.

The young Blues pushed to retake the lead throughout the second half but were denied on several occasions by the West Brom goalkeeper, who made some impressive stops.

It was a frustrating second period for Town as they couldn't take advantage of their chances -and they came close to losing the game in the final minutes as the visitors hit the crossbar.

In the end, both sides had to settle for a point.

The young Blues next return to action in the National League Cup as they travel to fifth-tier outfit Worthing at their Sussex Transport Community Stadium on Tuesday.

Town U21s XI: Noonan, Mthunzi, Elliott, Mazionis (C), Wilkinson, Doherty, Wood, Adetiba, Runham, Nicolaou, Eldred.
