Nico Gonzalez has proven to be an instant hit with supporters since joining Newcastle United.
Nico Gonzalez has opened up feeling loved at Newcastle United following his £50million move.
And potential transfer targets should take note as the Spaniard called Newcastle a “nice” place to live. Toon fans have regularly listened to pundits claim that players will snub a move to St James’ Park due to location.
Gabby Agbonlahor famously spouted that top-level stars would rather sign for Brentford on less money simply to reside in London. In truth, this did sting Newcastle over the summer as Sandro Tonali was hellbent to leave the club at any cost - directly citing a lifestyle choice for his family.
But over the years, a catalogue of former stars who hail from outside the region have endeared themselves on Tyneside to become club legends. Speaking to NUFC TV, Gonzalez revealed how a Newcastle icon who hails from the city reached out to him on arrival.

Nico Gonzalez opens up about Alan Shearer chat
“Sometimes they (club legends) come here and talk to us,” Gonzalez said. “They are in the stadium also. For example, Alan Shearer, who is very, very important for this club, the (first) day I (signed), he was in the stadium 10 minutes before I went out.
“I said hello and talked a little bit with him. He said the same things that people and players have said to me. That this is an amazing club, amazing fans and some things I didn’t expect too much.
“That life here is really nice. I think life here in Newcastle is nice. People are so friendly. Everyone knows that. Old teammates have told me that. And when I first experienced this, in the first month and a half, I can say that this is true.”

Nico Gonzalez on Newcastle United love
When asked how much love he has felt from the Newcastle fans, the midfielder added: “A lot! I’ve always felt loved at the clubs I’ve been at. I’ve always managed to have good relationships with staff and people behind the scenes. But the amount of love from the fans I’ve never felt (before).
“I’m really happy. It was an intense first month. I arrived and two days later we played against Tottenham. But then, for a month, I was in a hotel which is not easy. I wasn’t with my family. So now that I’m settled, I feel so happy and blessed to be here with my family.”
